Grand Theft Auto

February 22, 2007

We recently had a discussion in class about the Grand Theft Auto video game series in class.  We talked abou the impact it had on the children who play the games.  I did not agree with most of the things stated in the discussion.  This game has just as much influence on children as TV or any other type of media does.  While the game is overly violent, it is not marketed to younger children.  Do not blame the game, blame whoever would let a child play the game.  Just as there are rated R movies, there are rated M games.  This labels the content of the game or movie as being made for adults.  Now whether is be a brother, sister, or parent who buys a child this game, the blame lays on them.  Even if they did not know how violent the game was, they should at least watch there child play it.  Within a couple of minutes of viewing the game, they should be able to tell it is not meant to be played by children.

As for the game putting stereotypes into childrens head, I do not believe this is true either.  At that age children do not look at black or white, but rather good and bad.  Whatever impressions they get from the game will eventually be disproven as they grow older.  Games are meant for entertainment, and that is how they should be used.  If anything the games will cause playful violence, no worse than any crime fighting childrens show does.  No long lasting effects will be left from playing a video game.  If someone begins to show violent tendencies, it is not the game that caused it.  It is the persons violent tendencies that caused them to like the game.
